Trade and economic relations

Bilateral economic relations

In 2023, the Republic of Austria ranked 20th among the Republic of Moldova's global trading partners, with a share of 0.86% of the total trade value. Trade with the Republic of Austria amounted to 108.8 mln USD (an increase of 4.7% compared to 2022).

In January-September 2024, the Republic of Austria ranked 21st among Moldova's global trading partners, with a share of 0.9% of the total trade value. Trade with Austria amounted to 83.3 mln USD (up 2.8% compared to 9 months of the previous year 2023), due to the increase in both export (+7.7%) and import (+1.7%) volumes from/to the Republic of Moldova.

According to official data (Public Services Agency), there are currently 92 enterprises with Austrian capital registered in the Republic of Moldova, with 952.4 mln MDL value of investments in the share capital. According to the amount of invested capital, Austria ranks 7th among the main investors in the Republic of Moldova.

Development assistance

The Republic of Moldova has been a priority country of Austrian Development Cooperation since 2004. Austria’s cooperation with Moldova is based on the bilateral country strategy 2016 - 2020 and the Strategic Framework of the European Union (EU).

With the support of the Federal Government of the Republic of Austria through ADA (Austrian Development Agency), 15 projects are being implemented in the Republic of Moldova for a total amount of € 32 446 900 million in such areas as rural development (47%), water and sanitation (12.2%), agriculture (6.2%), education (10.5%), multi-sector (12.3%), environmental protection (5.1%), infrastructure and social services (3.7%), energy (3.1%).

ADA focuses on projects in water supply and wastewater disposal, environmental protection and climate change, economic development and employment. Promoting Vocational Education and Training (VET) is at the core of its activities. It aims to enable young people to find better jobs and to create a future in their home country. Reducing poverty and creating new perspectives in rural areas are the declared aims of the cooperation. In addition to Austrian funds, ADA implements EU aid. In addition, with the valuable support of the Austrian Federal Government and as part of the Austrian School Abroad (Österreichische Auslandsschule - ÖAS), a college mainly focused on electronics and IT will be established in the Republic of Moldova. The college is expected to become functional as of September 1, 2025.
